WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
BIRCH PLYWOOD SHEET ; in the size of your choice. Available at your local hardware store
VINYL LETTERS ; 6" letters are used in this tutorial, but pick a size to suit your preference
MOD PODGE ; Available at craft stores and large department stores (i.e Walmart/Target)
CHUNKY/ COARSE GLITTER ; Amount required depends on size of piece, but large amount of glitter is required (8-16 oz). You can mix glitters of different colors together for a more dynamic look!
HIGH GLOSS FINISH RESIN ; 32 ounce kit, available at hardware or craft stores
Step 1 : Apply your vinyl letters to the plywood board wherever you want them. It looks best to try to keep the spacing uniform (pictured with 1/2" space in between), so measuring and taping lines may help with this process.
Step 2 : Apply an even coat of Mod Podge directly onto the board, using a paintbrush or sponge brush. Start by going over the vinyl letters slightly and starting in the middle. Pay special attention to the edges around the letters and spaces to ensure you get a clean & crisp look.
Step 3 : Once the area surrounding the letters is covered with Mod Podge, continue to apply the Mod Podge in the area surrounding the letters, in the areas where you'd like glitter to adhere. At this point, you can begin to apply very thin layers around the edges for a faded out look, or you can continue to apply an even coat of Mod Podge right to the edge of the plywood for a complete glitter look.
Step 4 : GLITTER! This can get messy...
Begin to apply your glitter to the still wet Mod Podged surface, by sprinkling it directly onto the painted surface. You can fade out the glitter, or add different colors in different spots as per your design prefernces. The Mod Podge will dry clear, so do not feel like you have to cover every inch of the Mod Podged surface area if you choose not to ( i.e around the edges for a faded look). If an area has dried prior to the glitter being placed on, apply another thin coat of Mod Podge and sprinkle glitter on top of it.
Step 5 : Let the sign dry overnight, and once dry, remove the vinyl letters. You can choose to stop at this step, and just finish your project with a clear acrylic spray, or apply a full final coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface.
Step 6 : To apply a more permanent and professional finish, (& make it last way longer), you'll want to apply the clear resin. To start, you’ll first want to place a piece of painter’s tape around each of the edges on the back side of your sign. This helps prevent leaks when you’re pouring the resin.
Step 7 : Next you’ll build a frame for the resin to sit in. Do this by securing tin foil onto duct tape and then pushing it firmly around the edges of your sign, leaving a foil lip. Make sure none of the sticky duct tape is sticking up above the edge where the resin might touch it, or it will stick to the resin.
Step 8 : Follow the manufacturer’s directions to mix the resin.
Step 9 : Use a piece of cardboard to spread the resin to all corners.
About fifteen minutes after you pour the resin, you’ll notice bubbles begin to appear. Pop these bubbles by gently blowing through a straw onto them.
Step 10 : Let your project cure for one to three days, and then remove your tin foil frame, and sand any accidents off the edges using standard sand paper.
VOILA! A beautiful and sturdy custom decor sign which is perfect for any party!
